![]() ![]() ![]() There are three reasons to provide these resources to our students and as selections for read-alouds and small group reading work. Why are culturally competent classroom libraries and book selections for teaching new concepts so important? 1 They should have access to texts in which they see themselves and their experiences represented and valued, as well as texts that represent a diversity of characters, settings, and stories reflective of our broader society. Yet when building a culturally responsive classroom library, we must also focus on our students’ need to access literature that offers characters and problems similar to their own lives and identities. ![]() It is important that our classroom libraries include a variety of texts of various formats, genres, and types, including texts that can be applied for use in all of the content areas. ![]()
