From the monster movies of the 50’s to the Sam Raimi classic of 1981, Evil Dead, to the Woody Harrelson film Zombieland to the recent bestseller Pride and Prejudice and Zombies or the latest runaway AMC TV show The Walking Dead there is just something about zombies that seems to resonate in our blood. I'm removing a half a star because the spicy scenes were a little bit cringe. This was a very, very good romance novel and I loved reading it. Chloe's illness, her want to live a more fulfilled life, her family relationships, Red's tenderness, his unending kindness, his recognition of his own flaws and going to *therapy* - can anyone else hear angels singing or is it just me? I feel burning shame for the reviews that complain about Chloe constantly reminding the reader that she was chronically ill - my god, can you imagine living in a world where someone's chronic illness was a bit too much for you to READ about - what do you think it's like to live with?Īnyway, I don't think there's an area of these character's that Talia fell short on. Inclusion of chronically ill people, or any minority is so important, and I think even more so in categories like romance because this genre exists mostly to provide happy endings (at least that's why I read it). I read quite a few reviews before reading for myself, and I expected something middle of the road. Did I expect to like this book so much? No. This is my first Talia Hibbert read, and certainly won't be my last. There are three reasons to provide these resources to our students and as selections for read-alouds and small group reading work. Why are culturally competent classroom libraries and book selections for teaching new concepts so important? 1 They should have access to texts in which they see themselves and their experiences represented and valued, as well as texts that represent a diversity of characters, settings, and stories reflective of our broader society. Yet when building a culturally responsive classroom library, we must also focus on our students’ need to access literature that offers characters and problems similar to their own lives and identities. It is important that our classroom libraries include a variety of texts of various formats, genres, and types, including texts that can be applied for use in all of the content areas. |
